Play therapy uses play as a means of communication and expression for children. It is a research-based approach that is designed to help children work through emotional, behavioral, and social difficulties. Play therapy is typically used best for children ages 3-12, but can also be used with adolescents and adults.
The play therapist works to create a safe and nurturing environment for the child to explore and express their feelings through play. These sessions will take place in a playroom that is equipped with toys, art supplies, and other materials that can facilitate creative expression. The therapist will observe the child's play and use techniques to help the child process emotions and experiences. This can include using puppets, sand tray therapy, art therapy, storytelling, and other forms of play that encourage emotional expression.
The goal of play therapy is to help your children develop emotion regulation, coping skills, and social skills. Through a safe environment at The Haven, play therapy can help your child build resilience, increase self-esteem, and improve overall well-being. Play therapy is beneficial for a range of issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, autism and ADHD, behavioral issues, and family conflict.

Adolescence is full of transitions. As we all know, change is hard. As adolescents transition from childhood to adulthood, many issues can arise. The rise of social media has made the teenage years even more complex and confusing. Adolescents need a neutral person who understands their world to help guide them through this transition. We find great joy in connecting with our teenage clients and find that our therapy style helps these clients to open up and share more easily. We work with adolescents to help increase maturity, self esteem, confidence, and decision making skills while also helping to prepare them for the next step in their life.
For teenagers, a variety of therapy types can be beneficial, including individual, group, and family therapy often combined with specific modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), creative/art therapy, or trauma-focused therapy such as Attachment Focused EMDR

During family sessions, we will work to identify and address any issues that may be causing conflict or tension within your family. We will also work to explore family dynamics, patterns of behavior, and communication styles. We will identify and develop new ways of interacting that promote a healthier and more supportive environment for the whole family.
Family therapy can be helpful for a wide range of issues like behavioral concerns, relationship conflicts, parental issues, communication disconnections, loss, major life transitions, mental health concerns, substance abuse, and more. The goal of family therapy is to help your family members build stronger connections, improve communication, and create a harmonious family environment.
We will meet as a family unit to discuss rules for family sessions and to develop a treatment plan that meets your families unique needs and goals. All family members are invited to attend. While family therapy could be brief or extended, we will work together to achieve all the goals and expectations you have.

Group therapy provides an environment to explore and share with others who struggle with similar issues. As you listen to other’s experiences, often insights will be elicited that would not be available in an individual or couple therapy setting. Additionally, you can witness people on the continuum of recovery, some just beginning and others much further along. This can assist you in seeing your progress, as well as, help you have hope in future success. Most clients report that being in group therapy helps decrease their shame, increase their sense of connection and boost their feelings of hope.
Group therapy consists of 6-8 members (on average) who struggle with similar issues and meet together regularly with a therapist. Groups meet together on a weekly basis for 1.5-2 hours. Groups are semi-closed, meaning that members make a commitment to the group, so that group membership stays fairly consistent unless a group member graduates, or a new member joins (with prior approval of the group and therapist). All groups are therapist-led. All groups are gender-specific (with the exception of couple intensives).

Imagine a life where you feel whole—calm, confident, and peaceful. If that doesn’t feel like your reality right now, you’re not alone. Many of the challenges we face in the present are rooted in unresolved trauma from the past. Whether you experienced neglect, attachment trauma, grief and loss, PTSD, betrayal, bullying or are a first responder, we can help.
At The Haven, we offer trauma-informed therapy, Attachment Focused EMDR and mindfulness-based counseling to help you reconnect with your inner strength and find lasting emotional wellness.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, research-backed approach to healing trauma and PTSD. EMDR works by helping you reframe old wounds—transforming the way your brain and body hold onto those memories. As a result, you can begin to see yourself through a more compassionate, empowered lens—one that reflects your true strength, resilience, and worth.

Somatic Experiencing, as developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a more natural approach to healing trauma based on observations of the survival strategies of animals in the wild. Dr. Peter Levine discovered that humans possess the same survival strategies as animals, however, it is our rational mind that overrides our body’s natural ability to heal itself. This causes the energy that is created during the fight or flight responses to become trapped within the nervous system. Somatic Experiencing helps to access this trapped energy, and gradually discharge the energy through body awareness techniques.
Somatic Therapy helps to process and let go of traumatic experiences, fostering a sense of safety and empowerment. Regulates the nervous system, reduces anxiety, and encourages relaxation and peace of mind. Enhances awareness of bodily signals connected to emotions, supporting, greater emotional balance and control. Aims to alleviate muscular tension and improve physical movement for better overall function.

For your convenience, many of our therapists offer telehealth services using video conferencing software. This is for clients who would like to work with one of our therapists but prefer the convenience of video or cannot make it to our office. This can be used from time to time in between face to face sessions or from start to finish for all of your therapy sessions. Please note, this might not be the right fit for every client.
